14 November 2015: BIG WIN FOR YORK u16s against LOCAL RIVALS LEEDS u16s

Leeds Force 23     :     York Eagles 106

1st Qtr      2nd Qtr      3rd Qtr      4th Qtr

LEEDS           4                 6                 4                  9

YORK          22               27                39                18

Scores from the National NE u16 Development League suggested that Leeds Force 2 were a struggling team and so it proved with the first quarter reflecting the difference between York Eagles who could be a Premier team and a poor Leeds u16s second team. 4 points is a normally a mixture of good defense and poor offense and scoring over 20 points a quarter is also either a sign of poor defense being played or good offense. The second quarter continued in similar fashion with 8 out of the 10 York players getting on the scoresheet and an increase in the quarter points to 27. 49 to 10 at half time was a fair reflection of the first half. Scorers: Milan Manandhar 17, Rory Thompson 15, George Halliday 11, Dan Wright 8 Euan Collins 8, Joe Henderson 6, Miles Rodeo 3, Tom Haygarth 2, Andrew McFarlane 2.  Did not score : Tom Farrington and Patrick Dewhirst. Free throws: 11 from 22 is 50%. Only 2 from 8 in 3rd qtr.

York went into this game knowing that Durham were a top team with only one loss to Newcastle and York were coming off a dramatic win away against Newcastle and Coach Smith and Coach Roman were keen to see how York started against Durham.  York had possibly a perfect start with some great pressure defense and were up 21 to 0 with Durham and their supporters shell shocked.  After 5 minutes the game was as good as over and after one quarter York had a 30 to 6 lead.  The starters of Manandhar and Thompson at guard and Collins, Henderson and Wright as forwards literally destroyed Durham in every aspect of the game. Also significant was York had not been a team that were used to getting a good start in games – so just the perfect start showed York can start well.

The second quarter ended 10 each when after substitutions York’s offensive fluency disappeared and Durham’s introduction of a 1 – 3 – 1 zone seemed to confuse York despite York using the same defense in training. Significantly Durham committed one foul all quarter suggesting York were not penetrating and settling for outside shots and not scoring from them.

The second half was tight up to the start of the 4th quarter with York easing off and at York 56 Durham 29 the lead had only been increased by 3 from the end of the first quarter.  A 16 to 11 burst in the 4th quarter saw a tiring and disillusioned Durham fade away to lose by 32 points and York remain unbeaten and top of the league.

Moment of the Match: the first 5 minutes of the game with York playing great team defense, all 5 starters being on the scoresheet and a 21 to 0 score in York’s favour.

Man of the Match: George Halliday who after a shaky start got going on defense and offense (with 11 points) and better decision making

Summary

This game was an excellent example of what a good start means in basketball. Perhaps the start was too good as a 24 point gap in 10 mins at the start became only an 8 point gap after the remaining 30 mins .  Defensively York was strong through out the game and restricting a team to less than 15 points a quarter is always our target.  Offensively we were inconsistent with 30 points scored in 10 mins and then 10 points scored in the next.  The Durham zone caused issues and we never really executed the three Ps of passing, patience and penetration that would have caused Durham’s zone problems.  York also managed to be in foul trouble all 4 quarters and fouling negates good defense. So played 7 Won 7 and we play Barnsley next week to try and be unbeaten in the first half of the season.
